Abstract - The problem of classical optics related to the electromagnetic-field distribution near the surface of a dielectric medium with allowance made for its discrete structure is solved. The effect of a probe on the near-field optical observations is taken into account, and the condition is obtained under which this effect can be neglected. It is shown that the near-field observations can be used to get information not only on the surface structure but also on the effective fields in the near-surface region. A method for optically controlling the probe position over the surface is proposed.
