Abstract - The role of the near-field effect in the boundary-value problems of classical linear optics is studied for dielectric media with different spatial symmetries of atomic distribution. It is shown that the near-field effect is maximum in media whose Wigner-Seits cell has no inversion symmetry. The influence of the angle of incidence of the external wave on the magnitude of the effect for observation point inside and outside the medium is analyzed for the crystals with a cubic lattice.
